Ok, in my case, while I am trying this on Ubuntu 14.04 and Juno on the below command I would get the status as below and the logs were frozen.

service nova-api start

nova-api stop/waiting

For some strange reason nova-api had gone missing, reinstalling it fixed the problem.

Adding to what Zaneb has written above, it's a little hacky a [blog post](http://www.venumurthy.com) for begineers to have it setup should appear on and you also try out the Chef Knife for openstack http://docs.opscode.com/plugin_knife_...

2014-07-09 00:25:42 -0500 answered a question Can't ping from VM to Controller Node Ubuntu/Havana/nova-networking

This is for posterity and for those who have struggled on and on and have stumbled across this page.

In our case IPTables was the one blocking the packets and hence changes to IPtables on the compute node on which nova-network was running helped the packets originating from the VM heading towards the internet see the light of the day! and remember to read about IPtables and if you are on a test machine it should be safe to run the below and save the iptables

iptables -I FORWARD -i <interface> -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -o <interface> -j ACCEPT

hope this helps!

2014-06-19 00:04:52 -0500 commented answer VMWare hypervisor as compute node?

Yes Shardy you are right,

not sure what you wanted to convey with the "small compute node", there should be absolutely no difference to the compute node, as even when you are not using the VMWare as hypervisor, you are using QEMU default inbuilt hypervisor, of-course its with lower footprint :)

2014-06-16 05:09:45 -0500 answered a question VMWare hypervisor as compute node?

Hello Shardy,

Just like right now you are using Compute to fire API requests to KVM using the Libvirt driver (setup in the nova.conf) similarly you will continue to use the Compute to fire API requests to the VMware hypervisor using VMWare's drivers, which are already provided in the nova installation.

And in a prod environment you will see that vCenter is used for orchestration and you will be levering it for HA and such and configuring Nova for the same, else if you would just like to use try out openstack on vmware, you can use the ESXi hypervisor directly too and the driver for this is also available in the standard nova installation by default. Hope this clarifies.

Cheers! Venu

2014-06-04 01:03:20 -0500 answered a question ERROR: [Errno 113] No route to host

Check the config file to see if the networking node has been setup correctly and

Get info on netstat -lntp | grep qpidd and restarting the qpidd service helped resolved this issue.

2014-06-04 00:55:40 -0500 answered a question nova arguments already parsed: cannot register CLI option

This error comes up when the attribute has been specified repeatedly and with different values at different config files.

The following helped us resolve the issues:-

  1. yum install openstack-neutron-openvswitch.

  2. Keeping the firewall_driver the same in the neutron.conf and ovs_neutron_plugin.ini files

  3. At one point the error was due to the messagebus service having crashed, starting it helped.

2014-06-04 00:17:30 -0500 answered a question neutron-db-manage python importerror

We had the following error when starting the neutron-server on the Controller Node (we have a 3 node setup, one for Controller, Compute and Networking) The error was

neutron-db-check: ERROR: neutron database does not have version information. You must run the "neutron-db-manage stamp" command before starting neutron services.

This was fixed by using the below command and as was done by author of the first post. I am posting more details

neutron-db-manage --config-file /usr/share/neutron/neutron-dist.conf --config-file /etc/neutron/neutron.conf --config-file /etc/neutron/plugin.ini stamp head

This resulted in the following error

[root@controller ~]# service neutron-server start
**neutron-db-check: ERROR: you must upgrade the neutron database before starting neutron services.**

Solution to sort this was:

There are several "RPC_BACKEND" parameters throughout the config files and in the neutron.conf the value for the QPID (AMQP we had used) should be entered for the RPC_backend which is right below the #QPID comment if you are using QPID.

2014-05-21 04:56:52 -0500 answered a question ERROR: The server has either erred or is incapable of performing the requested operation. (HTTP 500)

Hello we were having a similar issue but we were trying to running Havana on CentOS and this error came up while configuring the Neutron node with the OpenVSwitch and posting it here for posterity .

We solved it by editing the nova.conf. Let's have the firewall disabled for now to ensure that it is not the cause for this error.

firewall_driver=nova.virt.firewall.NoopFirewallDriver
#security_group_api=neutron

ie. comment out the security_group as it is futile to have it enabled while the firewall itself is off.

Hope this helps!

Hello we were having a similar issue and solved it by editing the nova.conf.

I suppose that you are not specific about having the firewall enabled at this point in time. If that is the case set

firewall_driver=nova.virt.firewall.NoopFirewallDriver
#security_group_api=neutron

ie. comment out the security_group as it is futile to have it enabled while the firewall itself is off.

Hope this helps!
