2013-04-02 17:27:43 -0500 asked a question How Many Physical Servers and with what Resources?

I will be setting up openstack next week. From what I have been reading, it looks like for a production environment that at least 3 or 4 physical servers should be used to set it up right. Right now my requirements are EXTREMELY small, 23 Virtual Machines and less than 200 domains. Is this correct that all I need is 3 servers for a small production environment? I was thinking to use 3 with smaller servers with Solid Stated Drives (SSD) to make the control system really fast. I was thinking to add at least one more server with 6 X 2TB SAS drives for real storage. This set up may sound insane for setting up such a small system but I anticipate it to expand rather quickly and I do not want to have to do the control system all over again, I only want to add resources as I grow from the start aftere I actually launch. The idea is to use faster servers with SSD as the control system with SSD drives to make it fly. Is 64GB RAM 6 x 64GB SSD for each of the control units enough? Can someone help me with this as I am thinking to go and buy the servers on Friday because my subscription runs out in two weeks where I have my 23 virtual machines at now.

Would I be better off with adding something like a DELL POWERVAULT MD1000 15 x 2TB SAS 30TB STORAGE RAILS PERC 5E SAS CABLE for storage or just adding something like A DELL POWEREDGE R710 2 x QUAD CORE E5540 2.53GHz 64GB RAM 6 x 2TB SAS DRIVES for storage

Proposed System No 1:

(THREE) - DELL POWEREDGE R610 2 x QUAD CORE E5620 2.4GHz 64GB RAM 6 x 64GB SSD

(ONE) - DELL POWERVAULT MD1000 15 x 2TB SAS 30TB STORAGE PERC 5E SAS CABLE

Proposed System No 2:

(THREE) - DELL POWEREDGE R610 2 x QUAD CORE E5620 2.4GHz 96GB RAM 6 x 64GB SSD

(ONE) - DELL POWEREDGE R710 2 x QUAD CORE E5540 2.53GHz 64GB RAM 6 x 2TB SAS DRIVES

Proposed System No 3:

(THREE) - DELL POWEREDGE R710 2 x QUAD CORE E5540 2.53GHz 64GB RAM 6 x 2TB SAS DRIVES

Proposed System No 4:

(FOUR) - DELL POWEREDGE R710 2 x QUAD CORE E5540 2.53GHz 64GB RAM 6 x 2TB SAS DRIVES

Which proposed system would be best for setting up openstack and why? Am I allowed to post my email address here?

Thanks, Howard
