2014-02-20 05:49:16 -0600 answered a question unable to ping between VMs launched on separate compute nodes

Thinks to check:

  1. Verify both instances have got an ip address from dhcp. Login to the instance and run "ifconfig" or its equivalent to verify the interface has an ip.
  2. Verify security group rules allow icmp
  3. Verify the bridges and ports and properly created on both compute nodes.

There are more things to check, but you can start with above. Are you using ovs or linuxbridge?

Yes, that is what I asked in my previous command. I was asking whether you can ping the LAN gateway from allinone system and from namespace, not the quantum default gateway. They should be pingable for floating ips to work.

2014-02-20 04:21:54 -0600 answered a question Create the base Neutron networks

What would be my gateway_external_network_id = EXT_NET_ID

It should be the id of the external network that need to be handled by this sepcific l3-agent. id of the external network can be obtained from "neutron net-list" command.

ID for router can be obtained from "neutron router-list"

2014-02-20 00:56:42 -0600 answered a question Can ping the VM but can't ssh into the VM

You can set a root password to the image before uploading it to glance. This will allow you to log in and see whether cloud-init has populated the ssh key properly or not and troubleshoot if it hasn't.

# guestfish --rw -a <image-name>
><fs> run
><fs>list-filesystems
><fs> mount /dev/vda1 /
><fs> vi /etc/shadow

Replace the encrypted password. This will set the password for the image permanently. An encrypted password can be created using openssl command.

Are you able to ping the external gateway from allinone system? like # ping gateway-ip

Are you able to ping the external gateway from namespace? Like # ip netns exec qrouter-xxxx ping gateway-ip

2014-02-19 07:09:38 -0600 answered a question Howto set up neutron in a one-network-node scenario

As you found out using a provider external network is the best way to handle this. Create a network as flat network and add a subnet to it. Withing l3-agent.ini set empty value for external_network_bridge like "external_network_bridge =" This will allow you to instantiate instances directly to it.

It's better to let the ip assignment handled by Neutron dhcp server instead of the external dhcp server to avoid confusion between actual ip and the ip on instances and the ip noted by openstack.

2014-02-19 06:58:13 -0600 answered a question Packstack --Allinone ?

You can do most of your work with an all-in-one setup except some network testing that involves vlan, gre or vxlan which requires additional compute nodes.

When you add additional compute nodes, you may need to change the networking configuration to move from local to a vlan, gre, vxlan setup.

I think you need to wait for below: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/nova/+spec/remove-nova-compute https://review.openstack.org/#/c/39998/ For time being only db hack. I believe.

Does "nova service-list" show them as Up or Down?

2014-02-03 01:41:29 -0600 answered a question Port on router to public gateway always down.

I heard this would work if you use a provider external network ie external_network_bridge =

I heard if not using provider external network. ie external_network_bridge = br-ex, then the external interface would always be shown as down since there is nothing available to monitor the interface in this use case.

In both cases, I have heard connection to external network from instances would work, but the status would be shown as "Down" in the latter scenario which is a limitation as there is no way to get the status of interface in this scenario.

2014-02-03 01:33:57 -0600 answered a question I have installed Openstack havana but iam not getting how to get the dashboard in the browser

I used to get the dashboard by accessing http://ip/dashboard after installation. How did you install Openstack?

2014-02-03 01:30:51 -0600 answered a question Horizon-Dashboard is not coming after creating the Neutron endpoint in Keystone

Is the end point accessible by keystone? If they are not accessible due to neutron service not running or due to firewall, i have seen dashboard failing with a message similar to "Something wrong has occurred"

2013-11-22 09:29:20 -0600 answered a question Openstack Networking

You didnt tell what problems you are facing.

If this is a single node, you need not bother about eth1 (interface for private network). If there are multiple nodes, you need to configure the switch port for (eth1) with appropriate vlan tags.
