2014-10-09 03:43:17 -0600 marked best answer Creating an instance with a specified name, or renaming an instance name after it got created?

I created 4 instances on OpenStack using euca-run-instances -k Franck -n 4 ami-00000023f.

The created instances have the following instance names (as listed on OpenStack's Horizon web interface)

  • Server b00b1b04-e9f9-4582-86ca-f5773a465f42-b00b1b04-e9f9-4582-86ca-f5773a465f42
  • Server 4d765b51-0511-474c-98f0-ef6199a23c7f-4d765b51-0511-474c-98f0-ef6199a23c7f
  • Server 378964ac-630e-4490-b738-383bed6bacb1-378964ac-630e-4490-b738-383bed6bacb1
  • Server b00b1b04-e9f9-4582-86ca-f5773a465f42-b00b1b04-e9f9-4582-86ca-f5773a465f42

Is there any way to create an instance with a specified name, or to rename an instance name after it got created?

2014-08-01 10:50:22 -0600 asked a question What does the “1” state mean in OpenStack's web interface Horizon CSV Summary?

In OpenStack's web interface Horizon, under Project Overview we can Download CSV Summary:

What does state 1 mean? Is that the state reserved for instances that appear in horizon/project/ but not in horizon/project/instances/?

2014-07-31 11:07:49 -0600 commented answer What is the Usage (Hours) in OpenStack's web interface Horizon CSV Summary and why most of my instances have the same value (17.02)?

Thanks! Also the column Uptime(Seconds) in the summary CSV is not affected by the selected date range, I don't know whether this is on intended or a bug; the bug report seems to address some similar/same issue over the stats.

2014-07-30 15:41:00 -0600 asked a question What is the Usage (Hours) in OpenStack's web interface Horizon CSV Summary and why most of my instances have the same value (17.02)?

In OpenStack's web interface Horizon, under Project Overview we can download a CSV Summary.

enter image description here

I am surprised to see that in the CSV summary I downloaded, the Usage (Hours) column is almost always 17.02. What is Usage (Hours) supposed to quantify, and what can explain that most of my instances have the same value (17.02)?

The official documentation doesn't seem to give any explanation

2014-07-27 17:02:59 -0600 answered a question Finding the exact amount of used RAM in OpenStack's web interface Horizon

You can see the exact amount of used RAM in the pop-up that appears when you click on Launch Instance :

In OpenStack's web interface Horizon I can see:

enter image description here

Is there any way to have a more precise figure on how much RAM is being used?

The best I have found so far is to look at the page source:

enter image description here

but it only gives me a number rounded at the nearest percentage (here 98%). I would like to know precisely how many GB of RAM are used.

Is there any difference between performing an OpenStack soft reboot instance through the web interface Horizon and SSH into the instance and perform sudo reboot?

2014-06-28 12:02:07 -0600 asked a question Is there any repository of useful scripts to manage OpenStack nodes with nova?

I'm writing some scripts based on nova to manage OpenStack nodes. I feel that most of them are of general interest and not specific to my tasks, such as

  • computing the number of RAM/CPU core each user in a project has
  • displaying the number of instances nused per user
  • list/kill all defective nodes (= no IP or cannot be a SSH into)
  • etc.

Is there any repository of useful scripts to manage OpenStack nodes with nova?

2014-06-27 17:33:36 -0600 commented answer Can I create an instance with a specific name with euca2ools?

To fix this, you can however use the nova commands and say: $ nova rename Server-2599 $USER-2599

2014-06-27 17:33:24 -0600 commented answer Can I create an instance with a specific name with euca2ools?

Thanks! Since links break, I copy here: Unfortunately, the default use of the euca commands uses the name server-<number> to identify a started instance. This is often not desirable, as many users have similar names and it will be difficult to find your own images when lots of users start images.

Code legacy, I'll definitely switch to nova as soon as I have the opportunity :)

My lab's OpenStack cluster uses Horizon as the web interface, but it takes around 5 seconds to load a page. How responsive is the Horizon interface supposed to be?
