It looks like you have something down. The request you made received an timeout, which means that you either have a connectivity problem or have some service down on the compute

1) Launch an instance on OpenStack. 2) Install the software you want to serve. 3) Have your clients make a rdp connection to that server. I'm guessing this is a Windows application you want to serve, and i can't help you with that operating system

2015-03-12 04:49:34 -0600 answered a question how to provide a traditional desktop application in the form of SaaS using openStack

You can set up as many software servers as you like with OpenStack, you launch instances for this.

Then you install the software you want on those instances.

Your clients will access the application using a remote desktop connection like rdp.

2015-03-12 04:40:23 -0600 answered a question number of cpu's required for openstack nodes

The number of CPU's is the number of cores. Of course if you can have different physical CPU's it would be better.

Be advised, the compute nodes need some horse power, because they handle all the hard work, so your best machines should be used as compute nodes.

Using a comodity pc in production will depend on what you'll be doing, how many instances will you be creating? What kind of hard work will the compute node be doing?

@foster Can you elaborate more on your comment?

2015-03-10 14:49:29 -0600 asked a question Instance creation fails (Block Device Mapping)

I'm using Openstack 1.0.1 on Centos 7 64bits, with 3 controllers, 2 compute nodes and storage mounted through nfs.

On Horizon i'm trying to launch a new instance (Boot from image - creates a new volume), and i keep getting the error:

Error: Failed to launch instance "windows_test2": Please try again later [Error: Build of instance e541f467-9a49-4fbf-b8ae-a792c389aa98 aborted: Failure prepping block device.].

  1. The new volume is created and it's OK
  2. An IP is assigned to the instance.
  3. Instance creation stops and shows status ERROR

The status displays Block device mapping for a long time, until it stops and gives the error presented above.

I've tried launching the instance through the command line but the error remains.

On the controller node cinder logs (volume and api) reports no error (logs are with debug=True).

On the compute node nova-compute.log shows:
