I installed OpenStack via devstack and I try to figure out why it is not working. So I am going through the installation manual for RHEL7 and noticed that I cannot log in to mysql. It seems that my local.conf values for the db password were ignored. What's a good way to see what devstack did do during installation? Is the password logged anywhere? I looked at the shell scripts and I saw that secret would be a default password or that the script would query the user for a password (but I cannot remember being queried, nor does "secret" work..)

mysql -u root -p
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

If your uses verbose logging, check the log file for entries of the sort

  • "mysql.*-p"

That should reveal the password your installation has set.

You might also want to look into lib/databases/mysql. Non-Ubuntu systems run the mysqladmin command to set the password, whereas Ubuntu runs debconf. That should be logged as well, or you add some echoes to get clarity of what happens.

I've seen this error if Mysql is corrupted. The following steps on CentOS resolved the the issue for me.

sudo yum -y remove MySQL-python.x86_64

sudo yum -y remove perl-DBD-MySQL.x86_64

sudo yum -y remove postgresql.x86_64

sudo yum -y remove postgresql-libs.x86_64

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/mysql/ /etc/mysql/

The best place to look at is in the conf file, which is located at for e.g., for neutron /etc/neutron/neutron.conf
