New to the openstack space and was trying to choose a distribution but i am quiet confused whether to install mitaka or mirantis or any other distros. What is the basic difference between openstack versions and distributions. or what is Mitaka and what is mirantis. sorry if its stupid but want to understand. :)

Mitaka is the previous OpenStack release, not a distro. The most current release is Newton; the next one, in April, will be Ocata. Mirantis is a company that makes a distro, among other things. The big Linux vendors, at least Red Hat and SUSE, have their own distros as well.

You can install OpenStack from scratch. It's a good learning experience, which I recommend, but won't result in a production-ready system. The distros add things like a relatively easy to use installer, security features, high availability etc.

Minor and not too much related to question: Ocata will be in February 2017, not April. It is a shorter release cycle
