I believe I understand the different purposes of Swift and Cinder. Objects must eventually be stored in blocks on a disk or virtual disk. Does Swift get these block from Cinder either directly or indirectly? If indirectly via which intermediate(s)?

No. Swift does not use Cinder volumes directly or indirectly. Swift persists data on servers with locally-attached drives formatted with XFS.
