The VMs on the private networks. The network is in VXLan mode. The instances are in kvm mode.

The cluster network is 1Gbps ethernet with full duplex mode.

I ran the following experiment:

(1) Run TCP server on each of two nodes

(2) Send packets

  • (2-1) Send packets to another node; A-->B

  • (2-2) Send packets to another node simutaneously; A-->B and A<--B

(3) Measure the performance

Results on the host nodes:

  • (2-1) Single connection: (A-->B): 120 MB/sec

  • (2-2) Parallel connections: (A-->B and A<--B): 120MB/sec, 120MB/sec

Results on the VM nodes:

  • Single connection: (A-->B): 72 MB/sec

  • Parallel connections: (A-->B and A<--B): 55MB/sec, 56MB/sec

The network performance of VMs are somewhat dissapointing. Is there any way that I can improve this performance issue?

Check out the MTU level set on neutron network, increase it.

If you have 1 Gbit connections it's equivalent to ~120 Mbyte, so I suppose you've reached your network limit.
