I was wondering if it is possible/safe to install and configure nova-compute on a host with KVM hypervisor supporting existing VMs. In particular could we have any Openstack node running as VM on the hypervisor with the host itself being used as a compute node? If yes, is there anything special to be cautious about?

Following the anwser received I am adding the details of the target configuration that we would like to achieve. One physical machine named "host1" running KVM hypervisor. On the hypervisor (running on "host1") one VM configured as Openstack controller node and other existing VMs (not related to Openstack at all). We want to deploy the compute node on "host1" with affecting the exiting VMs (Openstack nodes and non Openstack nodes). Is this safe?

You can use compute node on existing VMs there is no difference from configuration point.
For there more info you can refer to TripleO or Openstack on Openstack which clearly
describes all nodes running on Vms

Thank you very much for the answer but the question is more on the coexistence of existing VMs (possibly none Openstack node) in case a machine with KVM hypervisor is used as compute node. Please refer to edits.
