Does somebody know any documentation regarding regions or can explain me what this implies?

From what I've read it seems that openstack+regions means that almost all services, including dashboard have local (per region) installations. What is the common part between regions inside one openstack installation? Keystone and keystone db?

Or only the keystone db is shared between regions and evrything else is local?

Best regards, Cristian Falcas

Regions are a bit hard to define. On one hand, they are supposed to represent separate API endpoints for each service. On the other hand, the same API endpoint can be added to different regions.

I like to define Regions by using Compute as an example: Do you have two environments that require separate quotas and/or key pairs? If so, then look at Regions. (you can also look at Cells but that's more for an environment that requires distributed delegation of responsibility)

Regions, Cells, Availability Zones, and Host Aggregates all allow users to specify where an instance is to be launched. What makes Regions different is that (wrt compute) the database is in an isolated part of your cloud. Therefore, everything that's stored in the nova database is unable to be shared with other regions.

The following two links might also provide some helpful information:

Hope that helps,

I was asking because I would like to use regions also at my work place. But I don't know exactly what this involves: what will the common part be between installtions?

I realized that I did not emphasize enough about what makes regions different than other options. I edited my answer to try to clarify this.
