I some like a not defined question, you can have app workers, which are the nodes who make the work/compute. In OpenStack workers are often called to the backend services(the services who usuarlly run in a message queue). For example, nova-compute, cinder-volume, neutron agents, etc.

These services are statefull because are workers who make the processing jobs, in the other side you have API services who only process api request through REST api, like nova-api, neutron server, glance-api, etc. These services are stateless, you can loose one of them and the service still running
