I tried chwoning the dir as recommended by this thread, but it did not help:

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

It is permission issue only. It will not be anything else. Looks like your directory is owned by root and stack user is trying to write to the directory. So it is failing at this step.

If you look at this step, script is trying to execute following
cd to /opt/devstack/files
curl -O
This command downloads and writes pip-1.4.1.tar.gz file into /opt/devstack/files directory. It is failing permission issue. It means it is permission issue only.

Can you check the permissions of this directory ?
How are you executing the ? As root or as stack user ? Please ensure that you create stack user with sudo privileges. Post this you execute.

I'm sure you have seen this bug. I would request you to check all the steps from beginning as mentioned in the bug i.e creating stack user etc.

Figured it out, I needed to log in as the stack user and run ./

To do so, I had to call

sudo visudo

and add

to the file. Then rerun as stack and its working.
