As for compute platform, we should configure ntp client in each node, to make sure time is synced correctly.

Generally speaking, what OpenStack features may suffer, if not?

The OpenStack Operations Guide has an entry on http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-ops/content/ntp.html (ntp).

We forgot to mention one *very* important part: if the time between the controller and compute node is out of sync, the controller will simply drop the compute node from the cloud. As an experiment, set your controller 10 minutes ahead and watch the :-)'s disappear from nova-manage service list!
