How should I partition a server for a single node running both cloud controller and nova compute?

I would recommend an LVM VG named system with root (50GB) and swap (youll need to determine this).

A seperate LVM VG can be created for cinder volumes on the same disk(s).

That is what I used for initial testing.

thank you very much sam. the documentation is a little confusing for me. how can I add the LVM VG to the compute node?

If you are asking how to set up LVM, that is more of a distro question, and less of an openstack one. I would look at your distros documentation on setting up LVM Volume Groups for more info. -- If you are asking how to use VG "cinder-volumes" on the compute node, it gets shared out automatically.
