How to find out what REST API members are optional

I am integrating with OpenStack using a java client library that merely translates REST responses to dummy java objects. As a result, some fields can have a null value as the fields are not part of the json response at at. fault or OS-EXT-STS:power_state on /v2/XXX/servers/YYY to name a few. Looking into the (API reference), the former is not mentioned there at all and the latter provides no indication that it can be omitted. Some other API endpoints mentions that request/response arguments are optional but it does not seem complete to me.

Is there some more reliable source of wisdom? Or is this a documentation bug I should report?
