I get "no route to host" when I ssh my CirrOS instance

asked 2016-01-26 01:49:01 -0600

Hello everyone,

I set up OpenStack on 5 Ubuntu-Servers (controller, compute, networking, block storage, object storage). After I succeeded overcoming some difficulties, I launched an instance as I was told in the documentation. Now I want to do ssh cirros@15.196.124.52 but everytime I try it says ssh: connect to host 15.196.124.52 port 22: No route to host although I think my rules are set correctly:

#nova secgroup-list-rules default
 +---------------+-------------+-----------+-----------+----------------+
 | IP Protocol | From Port | To Port | IP Range | Source Group |
 +---------------+-------------+-----------+-----------+----------------+
 | tcp | 22 | 22 | 0.0.0.0/0 | |
 | | | | | default |
 | | | | | default |
 | icmp | -1 | -1 | 0.0.0.0/0 | |
 +---------------+-------------+-----------+-----------+----------------+

I also can't ping the server (Destination Host Unreachable). But that might be because of our firewall: I cant ping any IP on the www but apt-get update works out.

I tried out different solutions from the internet, also from this forum but nothing worked out. I would really welcome it, if somebody could help me. Also if you need some more information, tell me - I'm new to this topic, so I don't really know what would be helpful for you.

Kind regards and thanks in advance, Stupendissima

I found several typos, so after I corrected them, everything worked - grazie lo stesso.

Ciao Julia, have you verified (through VM's console) that it correctly gets IP address from DHCP? from which machine are you attempting to ssh cirros VM? Do you have connectivity from that machine?

Something you could test...

Connect to the network host and try command ip netns. It will show all dhcp and router instances created. Then try connecting to the DHCP referred to the subnet you are attaching your cirros VM to (15.196...) executing ip netns exec qdhcp-<SUBNET_ID> ifconfig. If it works, try connecting to the instance from there: ip netns exec qdhcp-<SUBNET_ID> ssh cirros@15.196.124.52.

  • If you have access, then it means previous attempts were performed from a machine that does not have connectivity to the VM.
  • If you don't, there is a problem with the VM (e.g. it does not get correct IP from DHCP)

Ciao Antonio, in the meantime I found out, that there are no IPs assigned to the instance. But I don't know how to figure out what's the error exactly.
