would like to understand the internals of openstack as to how virtualisation is acheived. What goes into creating virtual instances? How actually does the hardware processor execute the instructions coming from the software running on the VM instances?

As described here, Openstack use many possible hypervisors (kvm, lxc, qemu, xen, lxc...) to create, and run, its VMs.

So basically, Openstack don't create virtual instances on its own but use the hypervisor you selected to do it and become a (very) complex interface between you and this hypervisor.
