I am new to Openstack & i am planning to install it in 5PC's (one as controller & 4 as nodes) with ubuntu 12.04 installed in all. I am following the installation in http://docs.openstack.org/havana/install-guide/install/apt/content/ . All selected PC's have single NIC & don't have multiple NIC in them. I have couple of clarifications:

  • What is the main advantage of multiple NIC in controllers/nodes.
  • Where will i face the problem if i follow the instruction in that PDF with single NIC ?

Thanks in advance

Is it for lab purpose or production environment ? If it is production environment, you should clearly follow the guidelines. Openstack is distributed architecture. Lot of network traffic happens between the different components. It is the way for us to separate the internal traffic v/s external traffic.

If you are trying for lab purpose, where you can try with single NIC installation. You need to install different components on all the boxes. So you need to have internet connection from each boxes.

Hope it clarifies.

thank you.... we are planning to setup OpenStack for lab purpose only. i will proceed with single NIC & i am planning to use one PC as controller with all major components in it (glance, keystone, nova, mysql server). other nodes (PC) will have nova client & mysql client in it.

Just a suggestion. You need to install the components on different boxes. So it needs to have net connection. If you have any limitation in net connection, first finish all the installation. Post this you get into configuration. If all of the systems have internet connection it is well and good. Also hope my ans helped you. Can we close the request ? All PC's has active network connection among it. I am trying to follow the sample architecture shown in http://docs.openstack.org/havana/install-guide/install/apt/content/ch_overview.html#overview-architecture. So for initial test purpose, i am installing all major components in Controller.

Let me know if you foresee any problem in following that architecture. I will setup openstack & let you know if i face any problem. Thank you for your help.
