Topology with "seven servers" (ubuntu openstack)

It's mentioned in the http://www.ubuntu.com/download/cloud/install-ubuntu-openstack (official Ubuntu documentation) that one should have at least 7 servers to run Ubuntu OpenStack.

Could you please clarify what each of those servers will do? Why exactly seven is required?

Not exactly. In fact, you can deploy all three kinds of node(controller, network node, compute node) on one machine , but that is STRONGLY not recommended.

You may check Openstack Installation Guide(e.g. installation guide for Ubuntu 14.04: http://docs.openstack.org/kilo/instal...) Chapter1. Architecture - Example architectures(Page 3) for more detail.
