Hi,

Could someone please explain what Openstack actually uses the following interfaces for?

  • CONFIG_NOVA_COMPUTE_PRIVIF

  • CONFIG_NOVA_NETWORK_PRIVIF

  • CONFIG_NOVA_NETWORK_PUBIF

I know one is used by the host itself for dashboard etc, one is used for the private ip network shared by virtual instances, and one is used for the floating IP traffic which allows external access to the virtual instances.

I have read the docs they just haven't sunk in.

I suppose you are asking about Packstack config variables.

CONFIG_NOVA_COMPUTE_PRIVIF is inserted to nova.conf as value of parameter DEFAULT/flat_interface. CONFIG_NOVA_NETWORK_PUBIF is inserted to nova.conf as value of parameter DEFAULT/public_interface. CONFIG_NOVA_NETWORK_PRIVIF is inserted to nova.conf as value of parameter:

  • DEFAULT/flat_interface in case you use nova.network.manager.FlatDHCPManager or nova.network.manager.FlatManager as network manager
  • DEFAULT/vlan_interface in case you use nova.network.manager.VlanManager as network manager

I hope this helps you to find more documentation on those values.
