I have an icehouse openstack setup.

I have the following lines in nova.conf:

force_config_drive = always
config_drive_cdrom = True

Whenever I launch an instance, I can see a content directory in the config drive

openstack/content/0000 contains all network interfaces.

I can simply configure the static IP address from openstack/content/0000.

Now I have a new openstack cluster setup and I cannot see this content directory when I launch a VM.

I checked my configuration files and I can't find any difference with my old cluster.

Any ideas?

How about you try the boot option --config-drive=true - with your nova boot command? You could also choose this option while launching the VM from Horizon in the "Advanced options" tab.

I don't have to use this option since my nova.conf already has this parameter. The problem is not whether config drive was created or not, but what's inside the config drive.

The root cause it I set enable_dhcp=True. In two cases, the content directory will be added to config drive:

  1. enable_dhcp is set to false
  2. enable_dhcp is set to true but dhcp-agent never started.

If you set enable_dhcp to true and started dhcp-agent, even if you stop dhcp-agent, openstack/content dir will not be added to config drive.

openstack/content/0000 contains network nic configuration file in ubuntu version.

def get_injected_network_template(network_info, use_ipv6=CONF.use_ipv6, template=CONF.injected_network_template): if subnet_v4: if subnet_v4.get_meta('dhcp_server') is not None: continue
