minimal HA-setup / 2 Contr&Storage + 2 Compute Nodes?

Hi ...

i am getting deeper an deeper into openstack trying to replace my home-cloud currently based on an openfiler-cluster as storage box, and 2 kvm based "compute-nodes" (not clustered in any way) since all existing documentation i found so fare references to a minimal setup of 6 physical machines, i was wondering what the reason behind this is that it cannot be established with only 4 nodes? i thought that 2 nodes combining Controller&Storage plus 2 compute nodes could do the same thing.

thx for your feedback ralf

Hi, yes, this is possible, but there are many ways to do it, and it depends a lot on your setup.

For your KVM nodes, that will "just work" - no need to do anything special.

For services like nova-scheduler, that will also "just work", you can install them on multiple nodes as they communicate through the message bus.

For the user-facing services like nova-api, you will need some kind of load balancing - many choices here (eg RRDNS, HTTP)

Then you will need to enable clustering for your Message bus, and Database - this depends on the particular technologies in use, but for example RabbitMQ is pretty easy to enable clustering.

thx - so a setup with 4 machines, 2x nova compute + 2x block storage and controller should do the same thing like i have now setup with independent machines and services. is there any reference guide or how to that leads my to such an installation? which services would i need as a minimum to achieve high availability?
