Hi Guys,

I know I have to set up passwordless ssh to get this to work. Here is my problem, all the instructions state to switch to nova user, before running ssh-keygen when I do it prompts me for a password. Have no Idea what it is, and concerned if I reset it, what will break. Please shed some light.

Using Ubuntu 14 and icehouse.

Are you running these as root, sudo, or nova? Have you tried switching to your nova user and trying again?

usermod -s /bin/bash nova
su - nova
ssh-keygen -t rsa

You helped me figure it out. I needed to modify user from /bin/false to /bin/bash then as root I am able to switch to nova. My mistake first I tried from a regular user, that didn't work I switched to root and tried again, but I never changed usermod. I also tried usermod from basic user not from root

Also can you confirm if I need to do this on controller as well as compute nodes, or just compute nodes?

Should just be your compute nodes, also in your ~/.ssh/config (if this file doesn't exist, just create it):

Host * StrictHostKeyChecking no

or you can manually SSH to all compute nodes that exist and accept the key

Do I need to set a password for the nova user? tried ssh-copy-id nova@host, prompting for password. Also, would resetting this password impact anything in openstack, not sure how this nova user id different from nova user in keystone.

why not just scp /var/lib/nova/.ssh/ root@compute01:/var/lib/nova/.ssh/authorized_keys

sudo chown -R nova:nova /var/lib/nova/
