I am currently drafting a Public Cloud platform – we are moving out from the legacy VMware reign and we are trying to change the way we do things. I would need the lights from some experts here, so I can make a more educated decision.

Since our move will more look like a new deployment, as we are using new servers and new storage capacity, we are not really bothered to keep legacy VMs and move them at a later time. At this time, we started the lab about 3 months ago and we still have much to test.

We questions ourselves a lot about which hypervisor to choose, we believe it’s time to leave VMware, generally speaking for a financial matter. We have undergone long labs and have been very happy with Hyper-V 2012 R2 and Xen. We had a good experience with KVM too, though it required greater efforts and skills to get going.

Our decision is based on: (1) product reliability, (2) ease of basic manageability, (3) cost saving in licenses, (4) automation. We have selected openstack as the automation platform and we want to be able to shift basic tasks to junior staff and Hyper-V is therefore looking as the best candidate for us.

I’d like to know if there are known limitations which should make us think twice before going with OpenStack + Hyper-V 2012 R2. For instance, will Hyper-V work along with the Neutron/firewall? I’m more than happy to hear some feedbacks from people who have walked here previously!

support for Hyper-V 2012 R2 is included starting with Havana. Support for Neutron is included, including interoperability with OpenVSwitch (Flat / VLAN) support.

The Hyper-V installer is available at:

Thank you for your reply Alex.

Are they known limitations, bugs or things that I should be aware of when using Hyper-V 2012 R2? Compared to KVM or Xen, will there be a lot of missing features?
