I am new to understanding how the Swift component works. Assuming i have a cluster with one proxy and one storage node with a single disk and replicas set to 1. What happens if this disk has failed and Swift is not able to write to it? What does the proxy server do with the request?

If you have only 1 Proxy and one storage node, with a replica set of 1, if the disk fails then there is no swift ring left. Any requests made to the proxy server will fail. Whether it be write or read.
