I had a similar issue because I am behind a proxy and I had exported http_proxy and https_proxy variables. I forgot to export no_proxy variable. My .bashrc looks like this:

vagrant@vagrant-ubuntu-trusty-64:~$ tail -4 .bashrc
export http_proxy="http://X.X.X.X:3128/"
export https_proxy="http://X.X.X.X:3128/"
export ftp_proxy="http://X.X.X.X:3128/"
export no_proxy="local,localhost,127.0.0.1,10.0.2.15"

after setting no_proxy the installation completes faster and succesfully
