Hey hi, from your statement I assume that your instance is getting into error state after you say nova boot command. Can you put your nova log files snippets over here?

If you want useful answers, please update your question to provide with more information. What ubuntu image are you trying to upload? Where did you get it? What error message did you see? Have you checked your server logs for more information?

Hi, First try with simple cirros image and later you can try creating instance from ubuntu image. You can download ubuntu image from http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/trusty... . To get more images refer http://docs.openstack.org/image-guide... . Recheck whether your image is downloaded correctly. Then verify your image format using file filename.img. Upload the image using

glance image-create --name "IMAGELABEL" --disk-format FILEFORMAT --container-format bare --is-public True--progress < IMAGEFILE.img

Finally follow the steps in guide to launch instance. If you still get error after doing all these then edit your question adding more details like error, logs info.

There can be many reason for an instance to get into error state, it can be only found out by seeing the logs, most common cause is no valid compute host found(lack of resources, or hypervisor doesn't support the image, or image metadata is set to resources that are higher than flavor you are using to launch the instance, etc ) or compute node is down. You can try ubuntu cloud images from the below link: https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/ Then boot image using:

nova boot --flavor <flavor_id> --user-data=./mydata.txt  --image image-id <Instance_name>

where mydata.txt shoud contain cloud-config data as follows:-

#cloud-config
password: <password_touse_with_instance>
chpasswd: { expire: False }
ssh_pwauth: True

If you still are not able to launch an instance share the nova-compute logs.

create a base template of Ubuntu. then, upload the image file to glance using the below command.

glance image-create --name Image-ID --disk-format qcow2 --container-format bare --is-public True --progress < Image-Name.img

Now launch an isance from this image.
