A dumb question,

for a setup of OpenStack with vxlan tunnelling, is a special kind of switches required (with vxlan support) ?

For GRE, every kind of switches should work; For VLAN, almost every (with VLAN support) But for VXLAN?

Same picture as for GRE. In my home lab pretty cheap DLINK switch is installed for testing ML2&OVS&VXLAN TwoNode Juno cluster.

Well, If I understand properly, with VXLAN you get L2 over L3 encapsulation while getting ride of GRE full-mesh topology requirement, which increase scalability. Imagine a big OpenStack cloud with thousands of compute node. You would need lots of GRE tunnels, it would become unmanageable.
