How to collect telemetry(ceilometer) metrics from Manila file share service?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to collect statistics from the file share service component(Manila) of Openstack. I saw the InstanceResourceQuotaIOLimits feature of QEMU. It says IO throttling are handled by QEMU. But, I am not yet sure if this applies to NFS as well(IO over the network). Whereas, qemu says

Provide interfaces to throttle disk I/O independent of the underlying storage (image file, LVM, NFS, Ceph).

Wanted to know if Ceilometer will record Manila file share IO:

disk_write_bytes_sec
disk_read_bytes_sec
disk_read_iops_sec
disk_write_bytes_sec
disk_total_bytes_sec
disk_total_iops_sec

Thanks, prathamesh

I am afraid currently ceilometer does not support manila, however you can write your own plugin to implement that feature.

The steps are like:

  1. write a pollserplugin by extends the base plugin to wraps the quemu to get the data you want from the manila
  2. convert them into metrics
  3. publish them to the pipeline via oslo rpc or other transport method
  4. save the metric data into backend storage layer.

For more details you can check the code in https://github.com/openstack/ceilomet...

Hope that helps!

That surely helped, Vic :) Thank you. So, in short the disk IO metrics present in Ceilometer won't record the statistics from Manila file share service as of now; clarifying this since qemu's definition is somewhat confusing-throttle disk I/O independent of the underlying storage(NFS etc.)
