How does the nova manage the vmware hypervisor(esxi host)? Is the nova is directly installed the esxi host ? Or the nova is installed the another linux host, and then indirectly control the esxi host by configuring the remote ip address(not 127.0.0.1) of the esxi host?

besides the OpenStack official documentation, I think you'll find an answer to your doubts on this blog post by Rackspace Architecting VMware vSphere For OpenStack.

Both should work, what I use is install openstack on a linux machine and then control the esxi by setting it as the hypervisor, this blog may help http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2013/07/how-to-quickly-get-started-with-vmware.html
