We are going to experiment with OpenStack in our lab and on a 1U Dell server. Is Debian a good distro to start with with Open Stack?

Which distros are the most provailant?

This question is very subjective.

Ubuntu and Centos/RedHat are very common. I have not personally seen any production Debian clusters, but I am sure they exist. In the end I suggest using what you are most comfortable with/what the rest of your environment runs.

See the docs for more information. It list several common distros and guides for setting them up (including Debian).

Would suggest RDO IceHouse all-inone install on CentOS 7 or Fedora 20.
