We want to deploy Swift for development and research, what could be the best approach (devstack or actual installation) and minimal hardware/software requirements ?
Devstack makes the installation and deployment process strightforward by eliminating configuration complexities. If you don't want to learn how to deploy openstack(swift) in details, Devstack is best installation method for you.
In other words, if your major goal is learn how to deploy openstack the best method for you is actual handy installation. But If your major goal is test swift, devstack is better matched.

I use the swift-onlyone docker container in development environments quite a lot:

Its lightweight since it is a container & not a full VM. Very easy to install & can be incorporated into any dev stack if you need a small single-node swift deployment to be able to write API code with.
