If I am going to use Openstack Nuetron on VMware, do my VMware virtual switches have to be virtual distributed switches or can they be standard switches? Or will Nuetron replace them altogether?

I've got 3 x ESXi 5.5 servers connected through a Netgear GS105 unmanaged switch. Each vSwitch was configured in promiscous mode, allowed forged transits and MAC address changes.

controller, network and compute1 are CentOS 6.5 VMs. The VMs can live under the same vSwitch on a single host, or I can migrate one or all of them to another host if need be. I am not using Distributed vSwitch at all.

I think you want to use neutron only for Openstack traffic and still using ESXi as hypervisor for another VMs. In that case, distributed or standar switch don't care. The only need is that the interfaces assigned to the Controller, Network and Compute1 node, be in the same portgroup (VLAN). If you wan't migrate the VMs, you'll can make it. If is standar vSwitch, the port group might be created in all the hosts where the VM will be migrated. If distributed, only using the vDS, the port groups will be created in all the hosts using this vDS. Regards

Neutron cannot operate using Vmware's standard or distributed switches.

When implementing Vmware with OpenStack you can choose 2 possible networking ways:

  • Use nova network, which is not recommended for Production use.
  • Use Neutron with the VMware NSX plugin.

The Neutron plugin must be compatible with Nova hypervisor chosen.

why is nova-network not recommended for production?i see no reason not to use nova-network,infact from my experience neutron is not good for production because of availability issues of network node.we are running nova-network in production with out any overhead.

Neutron works just fine with VMWare standard vSwitches.
