Hi there,

After upgrading (stop all services, yum upgrade, db sync) from older Icehouse build to latest Icehouse build, my compute node (specifically openstack-nova-compute) cannot be started. All other services at controller and network nodes seem to be running fine. And before upgrading, everything was working fine.

Appreciate any help please!

# rpm -qa | grep openstack-nova
openstack-nova-compute-2014.1.2-1.el6.noarch
openstack-nova-common-2014.1.2-1.el6.noarch

From compute.log:

Did you restart the OVS agent on your compute node? You may need to restart it and verify that it is running. You can check on a controller:

neutron agent-list

Then proceed to the compute node and restart the ovs agent. That should help clear up this error:

2014-10-09 21:21:59.773 11811 TRACE nova.openstack.common.threadgroup _("Unexpected vif_type=%s") % vif_type)

If it does not then there are other lines of troubleshooting. Also, you may need to update the agents as well if they were not updated.

This forum post also seems to be somewhat similar to what you are experiencing:

neutron agent-list shows the agents are running. Restart all services multiple times, openstack-nova-compute simply refuses to start up. I did notices in ovs-vswitchd.log - a bunch of failed to add port messages: WARN|system@ovs-system: failed to add qvo1a5fea4a-6e as port: No such device

ovs-vsctl shows the ports already under br-int but then how come I am getting these port add failures in ovs-vswitchd.log? These instances were deployed before my upgrade...

So we are looking at agents on the compute nodes. Did you check out the thread posted at the bottom for ways to resolve the issue? It looked like you may have to make a manual update to the DB since it expects something different than what was setup in the previous release.

I am seeing this in openvswitch-agent.log - ERROR neutron.plugins.openvswitch.agent.ovs_neutron_agent [req-ed952ee6-11fc-4312-a6e0-5598953729db None] Cannot provision gre network for net-id=ad97603d-27a5-43dc-872b-b3fc0a4e55df - tunneling disabled

See if any of your plugins were overwritten or something. /etc/neutron/plugins/ possible that your openvswitch plugin was overwritten when you upgraded?
