The ubuntu precise 12.04 cloud image is linked to on the following pages:

If your deployment uses QEMU or KVM, we recommend using the images in qcow2 format. The most recent version of the 64-bit QCOW2 image for Ubuntu 12.04 is precise-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.img.

In one of the, the Note says "In an Ubuntu cloud image, the login account is ubuntu." The other doesn't even give that tip. Neither say what the password is. Googling for this info gives a plethora of suggestions to the password, none of which worked for me.

ssh into the instance is pwd protected, and the vnc console is as well. I cannot reboot and log in as single user, as the reboot causes the vnc to hang. One post suggested that the password would be listed in the console log. This was not the case for me with this image (others such as cirros centos did this).

dathomir, in order to use the Ubuntu precise image, simply create a new keypair (or, of course, use an existing one) and specify that during instance boot. This will allow you in with root access just as you would do with any other OpenStack instance.

Hope this helps, Craig

For Cloud Image, the Password authentication is disabled by default. You have to modify the image to enable it first.

/etc/ssh/sshd_config PasswordAuthentication = yes

you can also change the login user in the same file. Default is ubuntu.

The password is tricky. You need to create a password when spinning up a VM using this cloud image. the parameter to is adminPass.

In addition, you have to make sure the the following /etc/nova/nova.conf

[libvirt] inject_password=true

  1. Launch the ubuntu image with a keypair.
  2. Transfer the keypair to your ubuntu instance.
  3. Use the following command to ssh to it: ssh -i <yourkey.pem> <instance ip=""></instance></yourkey.pem>
