How to debug if bad happen during installation on instance

asked 2014-09-13 03:10:09 -0500

Can someone tell me best approach of debugging in case of failure on instance.

For example : After launching instance , it starts the installation of image which is being provided. But then due to some issue it could not able to start installation and throw some error on console . At that time IP (which is assigned to instance) is not attached to the interface so i could not able to do ssh/ping . So how I can get into the instance so that i could able to debug by watching logs? In Vmware there is a provision of entering Alt+F2 on console of instance and you get into root or can insert Recovery CD. How Can i achieve similar thing on openstack ?

You may find the nova console-log command useful, which will provide you with any output on the instance "serial" console. This is only available if the image has been configured with serial console support (most "cloud" images, like those from Fedora and Ubuntu, are configured this way).

This does not give you interactive access to the system.

For interactive access, you can often attach to an instance's graphic console and boot it into single user mode, and then once in single user mode make the necessary changes to permit you to log in on the console even without a functioning network.
