I am trying to convert my 500 G and 1 TB KVM running back end as LVM to qcow2 using the following command:

qemu-img convert -c -f raw -O qcow2 /dev/vg000/vm10 /home/images/Praveen.qcow2

The /home/images/ has 100 GB free space. How ever, the conversion takes all the space and getting error:

qemu-img : error while compressiong sector: no space left on the device.

Note :-

The 500 GB and 1 TB machine does not have any big data in it.

Please let me know the steps to convert this KVM LVM to qcow2 with less size of qcow2 format.

Earlier I faced similar issue, so what I did is workaround: I copied the raw image to another machine (different openstack controller) with required resources then used qemu-img convert and this was successful.

In old openstack controller: Removed the old raw image and then uploaded the qcow2 image back.

Thank you for your answer. I can not copy the raw image. The KVM was created by Virt Manager and it directly sits on LVM partition. Please suggest me a technique to convert large instance to qcow2 with lesser size.
