I am a total novice, so please bear with me!!

I have a controller node and compute node with Icehouse installation.

Compute node is connected to SAN which in turn is connected to EMC VNX array.

(Compute-------Fiber channel switches(brocade)------EMC VNX Array)

Controller has cinder-api and cinder-scheduler on it.

-- Where should I install cinder-volume on the compute or controller node ??

-- Also, please let me know if my deployment is incorrect and i need a separate cinder node with cinder-volume installed on it.

If i have cinder-volume on compute i am not able to create volumes:

Log(cinder-volume):

  • Objective:

To Use the EMC Array over the Fiber channel switches and carve out volumes from the array and assign it to the instances created on the compute using Fibre Channel Zone Manager from Brocade.

Thanks!!

You can install cinder-volume on any machine in your openstack setup, however most people would run it on the controller. No cinder components need to be install on the compute nodes.

After installing cinder, you need to configure the cinder driver for your storage box. It will set up iSCSI exports when a user attaches or detaches a block device. These instructions may help: http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/config-reference/content/emc-vnx-direct-driver.html (http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/confi...)

To manage the Brocade, you may need another cinder plugin, see here: http://www.brocade.com/downloads/documents/at_a_glance/fc-zone-manager-ag.pdf (http://www.brocade.com/downloads/docu...)
