Set defaults for new instances

I'm working in a dev environment that's behind a proxy. Each time I create a new instance through horizon, I need to log in to the instance and update the bashrc file so that it includes export statements for http_proxy, https_proxy and no_proxy. I also update /etc/hosts to make it easier to identify some key systems.

Is it possible to automate this? OpenStack must already do something like this because it puts the SSH key in place after launching the instance.

You can achieve it using post-initialization script while launching instances. You can use 'user_data' in post-initialization script to run a linux script. This script runs when you launch an instance.
