How to create a cinder availability zone on Icehouse?

I have tried to make the following:

echo "storage_availability_zone=my_zone_name" >> /etc/cinder/cinder.conf

on each control node, then restart cinder services, relogin to Horizon, but still see only "nova" instaed of "my_zone_name" that I need in a list of available availability zones.

How can I fix it?

Try to first create the availability zone for nova (e.g. using Host Aggregates): http://blog.russellbryant.net/2013/05/21/availability-zones-and-host-aggregates-in-openstack-compute-nova/ (http://blog.russellbryant.net/2013/05...)

Only then try defining a (existing in nova) availability zone for cinder.

I think maybe you should try to add storage_availability_zone=my_zone_name to /etc/cinder/cinder.conf of storage node rather than control node (and should be in the section of [DEFAULT]). In my deployment with Juno, I add it and restart the service through service cinder-volume restart, and everything works fine.

Nova AZ

# nova availability-zone-list | egrep -A 10 "^\| nova"
| nova                     | available                              |
| |- node-27.mng.kvh.ne.jp |                                        |
| | |- nova-compute        | enabled :-) 2015-02-25T03:03:32.000000 |
| |- node-28.mng.kvh.ne.jp |                                        |
| | |- nova-compute        | enabled :-) 2015-02-25T03:03:35.000000 |
| nova2                    | available                              |
| |- node-31.mng.kvh.ne.jp |                                        |
| | |- nova-compute        | enabled :-) 2015-02-25T03:03:33.000000 |

Modify cinder.conf

[root@node1 ~]# egrep "^storage_availability_zone|^default_availability_zone" /etc/cinder/cinder.conf
storage_availability_zone=nova
default_availability_zone=nova

[root@node2 ~]# egrep "^storage_availability_zone|^default_availability_zone" /etc/cinder/cinder.conf
storage_availability_zone=nova2
default_availability_zone=nova2

Restart cinder services

Cinder AZ

[root@node1 ~]# cinder availability-zone-list
+-------+-----------+
|  Name |   Status  |
+-------+-----------+
|  nova | available |
| nova2 | available |
+-------+-----------+

[root@node2 ~]# cinder availability-zone-list
+-------+-----------+
|  Name |   Status  |
+-------+-----------+
|  nova | available |
