Just copy using the usual process("Ctrl + c" or "Ctrl + x" to cut) from your document(PDF, etc.) and then paste in nano using "Ctrl + Shift + v".

Alternatively, you can right-click, when in nano and click on "Paste" to paste the contents copied before-hand from your document.

P.S.: This is valid for any process running on the gnome-terminal; for copying, use "Ctrl + Shift + c". See this question if you want to change these shortcuts:

However, if you cannot copy text from your physical host to a VM or vice-versa or between two VM's. To do this, you need to ssh into the machine.

Please post what has happened. Hope you are not trying to copy from your physical machine to your virtual machine or vice-versa; this is not possible.

You are not trying to copy from a VM to another VM or from your physical OS to your virtual one or vice-versa, right? AFAIK, the command above does not work in the said circumstances, but works otherwise.
