why first we update linux kernel for openstack installation

Mostly for networking for docker, ||el and SDN related features from Ryu, ODL are supported in latest kernal.

There was only one OS - CentOS 6.4, which required ( after openstack repos setup) yum -y update , to install kernel with namespaces patch. CentOS 6.5 is already coming with namespaces support ready kernel, F19,F20 as well.  As far as I know Precise && Trusty kernel are already namespaces support ready. I run `yum -y update` on RH systems, just to bring OS to the most recent state.

Nope if u use rhel 2.6 use u need to update your kernel first for sdn support..

Yes, it's about ip netns. I might miss some other features, but kernel upgrade is required only on 6.4
