I'm trying out Icehouse ... well, Openstack in general .. for the first time.

I've got Icehouse installed on 3 VMs [controller, network, and compute1] inside our ESX environment. Using the Cirrus image, I can deploy VMs without any issues.

Using the directions in the Openstack Image UG, I created a Ubuntu 12.04 image. Using virt-manager I was able to get into the QCOW2 image and make modifications. However, when I try provisioning from the Openstack image created from the QCOW2 image I built (and ingested into Openstack), the VM's console very sadly shows the below.

So sorta scratching my head at the moment. Any ideas what this could be ?

Something I didn't add to this question I now see I should have added. This is Openstack running on ESX v5.5. Also the ESX host this is on doesn't have that hpv.enable or maybe it's vpv.enable turned on so basically KVM isn't enabled. This is truly QEMU-only mode.

Related maybe ?

Got the answer - from this web page:

We're running ESX 5.5 so nested hypervisor support is enabled by default on the ESX hosts. So I shut down my Openstack Compute1 VM, Settings -> CPU -> Checked "Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS".

Restarted the VM, changed virt_type in /etc/nova/nova.conf like so:

#virt_type = qemu
virt_type = kvm

Restarted the VM and confirmed KVM was enabled .. indeed it was.

Deployed an instance using the Ubuntu 12.04 Precise image, waited a bit, and POOF ... got a working console :)

Have you tried with default cirros image and got any error. Then check with this image.

Yes, the default cirros image works just fine.

The above is my first attempt at making a Ubuntu 12.04 image for Openstack to deploy. The buildout of the image worked fine as per the Openstack Image User Guide.

Provisioning from it is what you see above.
