OpenStack is a Cloud platform or toolkit that orchestrates various technologies such as storage, networking and compute, including hypervisors. ESXi is a hypervisor but not a Cloud platform or toolkit. The VMware products that most directly map to OpenStack is not vSphere or ESXi, but vCloud Automation Center and vCloud Director.

In fact, OpenStack does not have it's own hypervisor but manages different hypervisors, such as KVM, Xen, Hyper-V, AND ESXi. If you want more details, you can read the blog post series I am working on starting with http://cloudarchitectmusings.com/2013/06/24/openstack-for-vmware-admins-nova-compute-with-vsphere-part-1/.

Comparing Vmware vs. OpenStack: I ran into a great slide deck Mirantis comparing VMware and OpenStack (Essex) and wanted to share it. I am not affiliated with Mirantis. I started to research a side by side comparison between OpenStack and VMware. The slide deck is really good and deserves more than a Tweet. VMware is a good tool for many enterprises, but with that comes at a financial premium. I tend to get worried if systems folks need too many tools in order to keep the lights on.

  1. VMware solves for the enterprise.
  2. OpenStack solves for the cloud Both technology and philosophy differ .
  3. Not an apples-to-apples comparison Select features can be compared side by side

It's not all about price and features. Open source has other benefits too, like flexibility. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzWod...
