I'm setting up my first Openstack cloud on RHEL 6.5, 1 controller box, 1 network box, 3 compute boxes. When it came to selection of a hypervisor, i was recommended xen. So now I have questions on the compute servers that I've not been able to find with lots of research:

Order of installation: do I install Xen first on the compute hardware? If so, how do I install RHEL 6.5 on it? And is that first VM considered to be my "real" compute box, in terms of configuring Openstack?

I just need to get a conceptual handle on this, as nothing really comes out and SAYS anything, and I've seen so many diagrams I'm totally lost.

In regards of Compute Nodes setup:-
First : You setup CentOS 6.5 , then Xen 4 Hypervisor. As far as I know a lot of work has been done regarding Xen 4 port to CentOS 6.5. I doubt that RHEL 6.5 will be friendly it terms of Xen 4 Hypervisor setup, but CentOS 6.5 for sure will.

View Xen4 CentOS6 QuickStart. This question would be better addressed to CentOS mailing list. Openstack should have special plugins to work with Xen ( default Hypervisor is KVM)
View :-
QaWiki Xen4
Install Xen 4 with Libvirt / XL on CentOS 6 (2014)

Second : Your fitst VM wil be Xen 4 DomU running at Xen 4 Dom0 been setup on CentOS 6.5 ( RHEL 6.5 ) host. Most probably Xen paravirtual DomU ( Domain Unpriveleged ).

I'm pretty much set with RHEL 6, that's our standard here.

Thanks for the direction!
