Hello everybody,

In the system requirements (http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-object-storage/admin/content/object-storage-system-requirements.html) it is claimed that 12 GB RAM is ok for 24 2T SATA drives servers.

We are thinking to use 45 3TB or 45 4TB servers. Does Swift scale to such servers? How much RAM will it require?

Yes, a Swift storage node can scale to 45 drives. However, Rackspace currently provides the following storage node recommendations for running Swift in production:

  • 1 core per 3TB capacity
  • At least 2GB RAM, plus an additional 250MB RAM per TB of drive
