Hi All,

My environment is Ubuntu 13.10 with havana release of OpenStack.

I was able to import Windows 2008R2 image into Glance. After I launched the image, Image does boot, but it automatically reboots and go into Windows recovery mode. Error message is quite generic.

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check hard drive corruption, and then restart the computer.

Technical information:

* STOP: 0x0000007B "

Are there any hardware drivers required to get this VM boot properly ?

Thanks, Sagar

Hi Sagar,

Here's a blog post about how to build OpenStack Windows images:

It provides also scripts that will automate the entire process for you.

There are also ready made Windows Server 2012 R2 images that you can simply download and import into Glance:

Hi Alessandro,

I have tried with the default pre-built image, but was looking for importing existing images. And that is where I am struggling.

Thanks, Sagar

Hi Sagar,

To launch windows image in openstack is tricky and this error you got because you have not installed the virtio drivers.

Follow these steps,

1. Create image outside openstack using virtual machine manager using the windows2k8R2 iso image , virtio disk, network

2. Before installation begins, customise it and attach with virtio drivers. latest vitio drivers can be found here [virtio-win](

3. Begin the installation and when prompted for disk drive drivers browse to the secondary cdrom (the virtio iso) and choose the appropriate drivers

4. After the installation is done install the network drivers as well. upload this image in to glance and launch instance.

Hi Anand,

Very good reference material. Appreciate detailed information.

But link talks about creating new image. I would like to use existing image, since our Admin team recommended that image.

Any thoughts on how I can make existing disk image work ?

Thanks in advance.

Regards, Sagar

I tried editing existing image with VirtualBox and installing virtIO drivers into the image, but still disk is not getting recognized. So it is seems there is something else required to get existing image working.

Anyone has any experience playing around ?

Thanks, Sagar
