I am looking to set up an in house openstack cloud for POC purpose but i do not want to go with Devstack, rather i want to install openstack as a minimal use.

  1. What is the minimal hardware required.

  2. Can i use a single desktop or laptop.

I am only seeing the minimal requirements with single node for Devstack but i am not able to find the minimal requirement of Hardware for a single node install for Openstack.

Really appreciate a detailed reply.

What is the minimal hardware required.

This is a difficult question to answer because we don't know how you expect to use your PoC environment.

If all you want to do is demonstrate that you can install OpenStack and boot an instance, then you don't need more than 4-6GB of memory and a small amount of storage.

If you expect to boot more than a single instance, then you're going to need (size of your instance * number of instances) GB of memory, and sufficient storage for any disk images you plan to upload plus space for the instance disks.

If you've found information about minimal requirements for a single node Devstack installation, that's probably a good starting point.

Can i use a single desktop or laptop.

Again, it depends. I have OpenStack deployed on my 16GB laptop...and I use that to bring up test instances of OpenStack running in virtual machines. It works, but I'm never running more than a handful of instances at any one time.

Assuming only a couple of instances at a atime what would be the hardware specs required for laptop/desktop. Would you give your laptop configuration(Processor,HDD etc) that are not the default ones.

OK,for a single instance what is the processor required? The documentation says in general about dual quad core processor.

However we have a laptop with Quad-core Processor can we make use of that for a single instance, if we have expandable RAM.

Like I said, it depends on what you're trying to do. You can demonstrate basic functionality with a single core, but you're not going to be running many instances that way. Your best option is to try it out and see.
