Where can I get a comprehensive, detailed guide about the Ceilometer CLI guide or even the Ceilometer API. And yes, which one would be more powerful to use- the CLI or the API?

UPDATE: By powerful, I mean which one would give me more functionalities such as listing meters, resources, etc. or is that it does make a difference(I suppose it shouldn't)?

'more powerful' is a very subjective question: please be more specific about your use case if you want an answer on that.

The best place to look for documentation of official OpenStack programs is the documentation site. If there is no documentation there, the best documentation is the source code itself, until more extensive documentation appears on documentation.

There is developer documentation at, specifically see Best way to get the CLI information is to type ceilometer help at the command line.

To answer your second question, you need to understand that the CLI is just a layer implementing API calls. Many OpenStack Command Line Interfaces have a --debug parameter that shows all the API calls that make up the single command. I'm not sure off the top of my head if ceilometer's CLI has --debug though. Still, the CLI is just sending API calls.

The updated page you gave here: is much more helpful. Thanks, awaiting the answer to the second question.

The CLI simply implements all the API calls. So it's more a matter of preference than power.
